Riverside Homes understands the nuances of crafting a truly custom home however as Matt Birdwell, head of Riverside Homes' custom division will tell you, building a custom 4,540 square foot home in 6 months is a daunting task.
Birdwell and the Riverside Homes team are working around the clock to ensure this home is everything the Southern Living readers have grown to expect. "It's being perfectly described as a new-old house influenced by the vernacular architecture of the Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach area. It's a generational home that is purposely being designed to feel as if it was added on to over time, with extensions, filled in porches and a mix of textures."
The Southern Living Idea House is ideally situated on a cul-de-sac in the exclusive new private island community of Crane Island. Surrounded with a dreamy canopy of century-old live oak trees dripping with moss and overlooking the water, the Southern Living Idea House tells a story of southern charm and hospitality from the front door to the back porches. "The house design captures everything the lot has to offer from overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway to the welcoming views from the park," shared Birdwell.
While construction is underway with a scheduled completion date of June, Birdwell has already chosen his favorite part in the Southern Living Idea House. "There is a large rear porch on the main level overlooking the water before wrapping around to a screened in porch area that overlooks the park. I think both of these porch areas will extend the living space into the outdoors. The screened porch will serve as a second gathering space and will feature an Isokern fireplace."

On Friday, November 16, 2018, a team composed of developer Crane Island Real Estate, LLC, Atlanta-based architecture and planning firm Historical Concepts, Southern Living, Jacksonville-based homebuilder Riverside Homes, and interior designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas, broke ground on the 2019 Southern Living Idea House. Construction will be completed early June 2019.
Crane Island, the low impact, 185-acre master planned community on Amelia Island, has been selected as the site of the highly anticipated 2019 Southern Living Idea House.
In collaboration with the developer Crane Island Real Estate, LLC and Atlanta-based architecture and planning firm Historical Concepts, Southern Living has assembled an award-winning team with Jacksonville-based homebuilder Riverside Homes and interior designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas, whose firm is based in Birmingham, Alabama, to bring the vision to life. The team will break ground on the Southern Living Idea House on Friday, Nov. 16 and construction will be completed in early June 2019.
Located directly on an Intracoastal Waterway homesite within Crane Island's luxury 113-home community, the 2019 Southern Living Idea House embodies the Lowcountry lifestyle, the island's natural beauty and the nearby Fernandina Beach Historic District. The 4,540-square-foot artisan homestead will feature an open floor plan with a spacious kitchen and four bedrooms, including a master suite on the main level, an upstairs bunkroom and a guest suite above the garage.
The preservation of century-old trees, optimum breezes and unobstructed views of the Intracoastal Waterway along with frontage on Crane Island's Alice Park offer a private and tranquil setting. Additional design highlights include a hidden pantry, mudroom, wine bar, elevator and a nine-foot, bi-fold sliding glass wall in the main living space that maximizes waterfront views.

In line with the timeless vernacular created by Crane Island's architectural guild, the indoor-outdoor connection is made throughout the home with over 2,250 square feet devoted to porch space, including front and back porches on both levels as well as a screened porch with an outdoor fireplace on the side of the home. Bridging together one's public and private realms, these outdoor living rooms will be a place to reconnect with neighbors and nature throughout the year—a signature piece of the Crane Island experience.
